In this eBook, we explore the Tandem Micro-Reactor system, a rapid catalyst screening technology for converting waste plastics and biomass to fuels and value-added chemicals.
To convert waste organic materials to liquid fuels, a wide range of conversion techniques, such as thermal, chemical, and biological ways have been explored over the last decade. Among them, pyrolysis, which is a thermal conversion method, is the most economical way to produce high-yield oil products from biomass and waste plastics. Pyrolysis decomposes polymers into smaller molecules using only heat under an inert atmosphere and is often combined with various catalysts to obtain useful gas, liquid, and solid products.
Efficient catalytic conversions of various forms of biomass to value-added chemicals and bio-fuels have been of interest and the demand for new catalysis has been increased. Catalysts are being designed to have greater selectivity, longer life, higher capacity and broader chemical applicability. However, the design, production and evaluation of new catalysts are time-consuming and cumbersome tasks.
In response to the need for a more efficient method to evaluate catalysts, Frontier built the Tandem micro-Reactor. This bench top analytical scale test platform combines a pyrolysis furnace and a catalysis reactor. The system is often referred to as a “Rapid Catalyst Screening System”.
