Characterization of Shale Rock with Thermal Extraction-GC/MS

This webinar will explore the thermal extraction-GC/MS technique and the method map for material characterization, and its use in analyzing hydrocarbons in shale rock.

Despite advances in bio-based conversion technologies, hydrocarbon-based petroleum continues to be the most cost-effective energy source. However, the search for and the development of new oil and gas sources has become more and more complex. Rock Evaluation Pyrolysis (REP) which determines Total Organic Carbon (TOC) takes several hours to perform and consequently, is not used for real-time, field analysis. Some laboratories solvent extract the sample before analysis, but the most organic material is not accessible via traditional liquid extraction techniques.

During this webinar, we’ll discuss thermal extraction-GC/MS technique, pyrolysis and the method map for material characterization, and its use in analyzing hydrocarbons in shale rocks. More scientists are turning to thermal extraction by way of Frontier Multi-Shot pyrolyzers to solve the analytical challenges of REP testing, while providing more detailed information.

Key Webinar Takeaways:

  • Simplified sample preparation
  • Improved accuracy of the organic determination
  • Detailed information on precisely what chemical species are present
  • Ability to perform rock evaluation pyrolysis and biochemical speciation on the same system

Terry Ramus, PhD

Principal,

Diablo Analytical

Over the last 35 years, Dr. Terry Ramus has done research in gas phase analytical techniques with an emphasis on applications of Mass Spectrometry and GC/MS for the industrial and engineering sectors. Application areas include process measurements for Engineering experiments such as catalysis, reactor performance, yield optimization, and scale-up. Experiments include alternative energy, syngas, and pyrolysis. These experiments include hardware and software for analytical systems, including mass spectrometry, chromatography, and other spectroscopic and discrete analytical techniques. For over 20 years now, research has emphasized the characterization of process gases in Real-time with Real-time Mass Spectrometry (RTGA-MS). Other efforts are centered on Pyrolysis-GC/MS for polymer and material characterization characterization and deformulation. During these years, Dr. Ramus has worked as a Principal with Diablo Analytical, Inc. from his laboratory in California. Dr. Ramus received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Oregon State University in 1985.
